Film Screening and Workshop: Non-Military Threat

NON-MILITARY THREAT: Queer (Indos) Shoot Back?

In October 2025, Indonesian President Prabowo designated the “dissemination of LGBTQ culture” a non-military threat to national security. The moniker “non-military threat” exposes a troubling contradiction: Indonesian queer people need not take up arms to be designated enemies of the state. But what if the threat lies not in queer life itself, but in queers’ refusal to live by the nation’s terms?

Join The Queer and Trans Negativity Working Group (JHI) for a screening of 5 Indonesian short queer films followed by a workshop with Indonesia-based queer film collective, QAMERAD. Alongside QAMERAD, we will examine queer negativity, opacity, and refusal not as endpoints of despair, but as openings toward worlds otherwise.

The screening and workshop will take place on Friday, November 27th, 2026 from 2-5PM in the Jackman Humanities Building, Room 100. Full lunch and refreshments will be provided.
