Diversifying Toronto Tourist Site Stories

In ANT465 Ethnographic Practicum: Toronto Tours, students have been examining
how visitors experience the City of Toronto History Museums’ new initiatives to
decolonize and diversify their stories. This course provides students with an
opportunity to conduct ethnographic research to understand the diverse experiences
of various visitors. In this intensive summer course, students work in teams and
conduct weekly fieldwork at Fort York and Spadina Museum through participant
observation and interviews. They share their research findings weekly in class
workshops to hone their research skills and sharpen their analysis. Student teams
produce original reports, share them with the partner organizations, and present the
findings in public presentations. Thus, the students contribute to public knowledge
by documenting and analyzing diverse experiences and viewpoints communicated
at Toronto’s historic sites.

The resulting research summary and final reports are archived here.
